Simple Tips to Limit Distraction and Stay Focused While You Work From Home

Avoid distraction and have a successful work day by utilizing these simple tips to help you stay focused while you work from home!

For the first couple of days, working from home can feel like a dream. You get to wear whatever you want, eat whenever you want, and more! But, let’s be honest: Being cooped up with very little social interaction can make you go crazy. Unfortunately, if you don’t have a plan, it won’t take long for your focus and concentration to diminish. Speaking from personal experience, it’s way too easy to get distracted while working from home. Chores, television, and even pets can contribute to a lack of focus. Luckily, you can avoid this by utilizing these simple tips to help you stay focused while you work from home!

Simple Tips to Limit Distraction and Stay Focused While You Work From Home

These methods to limit distractions are far from complicated and can save you from a whole bunch of stress. Not to mention that staying productive will keep your mental and emotional health in check. By putting each of these tips into practice daily, you can set yourself up for a productive and (perhaps more importantly) happy workday!

1. Set a Schedule

Simple

This is the number one most important rule to follow when you’re working from home. It’s incredibly easy to slack off if you don’t set a schedule. While working from home may give you a bit more flexibility when it comes to the hours you work, it’s important to realize that you still have a job to do. You don’t want to sit down with your morning coffee in front of the television and suddenly realize you’ve been there for three hours. Believe me: It happens

This doesn’t just mean setting a schedule for work, either. You can also schedule  chore time, workouts, and breaks. If writing it down helps you stick to the plan, by all means, go for it! Just have a plan and follow through.

2. Pajamas are for Sleeping

Simple

Working in your PJs is totally fine if you’re doing a little extra work on the weekend. During the week, though, you really should get up and get dressed. I’m not saying you have to get all dolled up, but washing your face, brushing your hair, and putting on day-time clothes (yoga pants permitted) will boost your inspiration and increase focus.

3. Create a Dedicated Work Space

Simple

You will find that choosing an area of your home to work will help feel more focused. If you have an actual office, great! If you don’t, that’s okay too. Set up a workspace at the kitchen table or counter (preferably facing away from the television.) Keep it clean and organized, with only the essentials within arms reach.

4. Make a Checklist of Daily Projects and Weekly Goals

Simple

You’ve got your schedule, you’re up and dressed, and you’ve set up your workspace. Now is the time to write down your daily projects and set your weekly goals. There’s something incredibly rewarding about being able to check tasks off your list. Plus, having them written down will allow you to manage your time better.

5. No Electronics Allowed

Simple

Keep the television turned off, especially if your workspace faces it. Turning it on will only distract you and keep you from meeting your daily goals. Furthermore, place your cell phone somewhere that you’ll have to get up to get it. If it’s right next to you, you may be tempted to get on social media, or text and call your best bud. Save these things for a scheduled break or after your workday is finished!

6. Know When to Wrap it Up for the Day

Simple

It’s easy to lose track of time when working from home, especially if you’re neck-deep in a project. When we told you to set a schedule, we meant it. This includes scheduling a cut-off time to avoid burning yourself out. The work will be there tomorrow. Give yourself some time to relax and refresh after a hard day’s work. You’ve earned it!
